HUMPBACK WHALE & CALF

Humpback whales are beautiful creatures! They are known for their haunting and melodic songs and for breaching the water with amazing acrobatic abilities. A female Humpback carries her young for a gestation period of about 12 months, and then nurses them for almost a year. They communicate to each other through soft squeaks and grunts, and it is thought that by “whispering”, mums are able to keep track of their calves while the soft sounds make it harder for potential predators like orcas to hear them.
